EP REVIEW: Caravel - "Texas Sunsets"

“An EP as beautiful as it’s name”

by Jesse Smith

We are 3 almost 4 years after the craziest time in our generation, but now we are seeing all of the COVID bands blossoming and that includes Houston’s pop punk outfit, Caravel. Emerging in 2020, Caravel had been RIPPING releases ever since. An EP in 2020, followed by an album in 2021 mixed with a handful of singles… this band has not let off the gas and they ain't stopping now! The boys are back with a brand new EP titled “Texas Sunsets” which is fitting because both the EP and the Texas Sunsets are beautiful. This quick listen is only 4 tracks but that’s all it will take to get you HOOKED! So let’s dive in!

Artwork for Caravel’s EP, Texas Sunsets

Starting off strong with the first single of the year is called “Best and Worst Mistake”. This track builds up using some influences from genres like glitchcore and hyper pop, this band shows off their musicianship as well as multiple influences. This is the first look you get of the band. It starts off with great energy but it only gets better! The second track is the second single titled “Keep Steady”. This song has a more traditional pop punk approach sounding like Blink-182 but with mostly Mark singing. From melody to musical choices, Caravel nails the pop punk sound and shows who they really are in these singles. The last songs are title track “Texas Sunsets” & “Worth Everything”. Worth Everything is the perfect song to leave you with. Feeling very positive and upbeat leaves you on a high note and wanting to listen to more. But the title track is definitely my favorite. A Little more aggressive, fast paced and in your face! The vocals stand out the most on that song as well!

Pop punk is one of those genres that span over a wide range of sounds, but one thing is for sure, Caravel embodies the heart and soul of pop punk. I think this EP really shows who they are and you can tell by referencing their home of Texas in the name. Like I said before, it’s so cool to watch the bands from lockdown starting to really find their footing, and Caravel is one of those bands who definitely have a solid grasp on their sound.
