SONG REVIEW: Heist Of The Century - "Stir Fry"

Heist Of The Century Shows Proof there is Beauty in Chaos with their latest single, Stir Fry

by Jesse Smith

If you’re a Progressive Metal lover, listen up because this one is for you! Chicago based Metalcore band, Heist Of The Century released their newest single that is a step out of the box for them as a band! “Stir Fry” is a unique song that takes the band out of their comfort zones and pushes them into a more artistic headspace. The reason I say this is because it sounds almost nothing like their previous release and their 2016 album “Hippocampus”. Let’s take a step on the wild side as we dive into this track.

People say that art is chaos and there is beauty in chaos, well this single is definitely chaotically beautiful. From song structure to the lyrics, this song is what I think ADHD sounds like. Starting off fast off the bat, the vocal performance by Jake Muldoon who does their screams is brilliant and skillful. Off the bat coming in with lightning speed that is choppy and follows the rhythmic patterns of his band absolutely catches attention. The other highlight of this song is Drummer Van Berwanger. Throughout the song there are moments where he cuts loose with his kick patterns and dishes us some lightning fast double bass rolls.

Where there is chaos, there is also some order. This is a dual vocalist band and the clean vocals are definitely the glue that keeps the song from flying off the hinges. Having more of a clear melody with the singing gives the song a break from the progressive nature of the song and focuses more on the atmosphere of the song. The song still remains heavy all the way through but the singing helps ease the gas a little bit.

Overall this song was crazy in a good way. It was like Between the Buried and Me mixed with Dance Gavin Dance mixed with ISetMyFriendsOnFire. This song for me was a great execution of the band’s vision of stepping out of their comfort zone and writing what they wanted to write. I’m curious to see what direction this band is going to go in now though. Will they stay with the progressive nature like this song, or will they go back alittle more towards their roots. Before I go I do have to say, “Catastrophe has stricken I'm falling off my chicken” is by far the best line of the song.
