SONG REVIEW: Jesse Collins - "Biggest Mistake"

“A high energy display of emotion and talent in ‘Biggest Mistake’”

by Jesse Smith

I’ll give TikTok the credit for really blowing up what SoundCloud started. This mesh of genres that melts electronic and rock music has really taken off and created a whole new genre of its own. People like Jxdn or Sueco who are solo artists that pioneered the new pop punk sound. In those names, you have to add Jesse Collins. Being a solo artist and producer since 2016, Jesse has really found his sound in the last couple years even with the hit cover of XO TOUR LIFE back in 2017. Jesse’s music sounds better than ever in my opinion, the perfect example is his new single “Biggest Mistake”. Keeping the same pop punk/rock influences, he’s really adapted to his new sound.

“Biggest Mistake” starts off with a simple electronic beat which leaves the limelight for Jesse’s vocals and pattern to really take center stage. Even from the start, Jesse’s talent of songwriting is quickly noticeable. From the start of the song, the catchiness of his vocal pattern immediately gets stuck in your head and his singing voice is super easy to listen to. At first it gives off a nostalgic Breathe Carolina feel, but as you transition into the chorus, the pop punk comes forward and really takes it up a notch. A high energy display of emotion and talent, the chorus driving and captivating. As you come to the end of the song, you realize you know every word like it’s been your hundredth time listening. Coming to the end with an up beat hard close to really put the song to bed…. Or at least until you hit the replay button.

Jesse Collins can definitely write a damn song. Having that nostalgic sound relates well with things I used to listen to while keeping a modern edge that everyone now can relate to. To be honest, Jesse should be getting more looks. The XO TOUR LIFE cover was 100% not a fluke, “Biggest Mistake” slaps. Highly recommend putting it on your sunny day drive playlist, thank me later.
