SONG REVIEW: Kings By Day - "Fallout"

“Illinois based rock band, Kings By Day releases a certified banger with new single, Fallout”

by Jesse Smith

Kings By Day is an alternative rock band from a suburb of Chicago, and they are another fresh face with miles of talent. They emerged onto the scene in 2022 with their first single “Weightless”. That song set the bar and the vibe for the rest of the songs, but the bar keeps going up with every release! Now, over mid way through 2023 and we have their 3rd single “Fallout” and the bar was definitely raised once more. Having influences range over a wide variety of music, Kings By Day have fused the pop punk energy with the emo lyrics and delivery and packaged it for the masses in a more sellable package. The one thing the band really prides themselves on, is bringing the energy and momentum back into the scene with catchy hooks and heartfelt lyrics, and that’s exactly what we got!

“Fallout” is about the final moments of a relationship that has already headed south for the winter. A feeling and a position all of us have been through at least once. While you’re listening to it, you get the heartache and emo vibe HEAVY. But even though as you listen, you feel like this would be a good crying song, but it isn’t at all. In fact, if you really tap into the lyrics and truly feel it, this song is about triumph and taking the hard stance. Want to know the worst thing about leaving a failed relationship? Staying in one for the sake of staying. Once I really realized that, I went back and listened to this song in its new light and energetic it really is. While having a beautiful melody, Vocalist Bailey Evert has a very unique voice that is midranged and he knows his pocket, almost like the band Brand New with a mix of Tom Delonge. Having the deep rooted emo inflection in his voice, the music is rather upbeat and super modern in the pop punk realm of the scene.

The slight differences in a formula that works is how it should be done. You do not have to reinvent the wheel, you need to just be different enough with something that stands out for the right reasons, and that is exactly what Kings By Day did with this track. The emotion really came through and even though you usually hear the sappy sad lyrics and delivery, they went in the complete opposite direction while still keeping the dynamics the same. At the end of the day, this is a feel good song, and I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did.
