SONG REVIEW: State Five - "OVRWLMD"

“State Five Are The Fresh Faces of Myspace Emo”

by Jesse Smith

I have to tell you, I’m constantly surprised by the underground bands that we come across. Being a product of the myspace era post hardcore I love finding fresh bands that are also inspired by this time period. California band, State Five and their new song ‘OVRWLMD’ is the perfect example of what I am talking about! The vibe and energy this band brings is nothing short of sick! If you’re fans of bands like Chiodos and From First To Last you’re going to want to read further!

OVRWLMD is not just nostalgic, there is a fresh touch the band brings. Having their finger on the pulse of the 2024 music scene, their use of the electronic element that creates that atmospheric head space sound is super well done especially in the intro. What first really caught my ear was the upbeat dance beats that were sprinkled in the song. Those kinds of things stand out heavily now, and I was glad that the band took creative choices and executed them how they should have been. The other thing that I have to praise is the vocalist! This boy can sing! It was heartfelt and sang with purpose which made me feel more connected to the song. The way that the higher, more powerful vocal parts were mixed in a way that it sat what sounds like slightly behind the music was a nice touch and gave the song depth and angst. I personally think all of these standout parts stood out more with how the recording sounds. It’s not as crisp and clear but it’s raw and emo and that really played into the charm.

So this band delivered a great post-hardcore jam that definitely landed. The more I listened the more I found parts that I enjoyed more than I did before. Again, the blend of influences comes through their music and you can feel who the band really is when you’re listening. There is just something about the old emo sound that still really speaks to me and this band nailed it.
