SONG REVIEW: tiqmmy - "Perkins Parking Lot"

It’s not “What’s Up Denny’s” anymore, it’s all about the “Perkins Parking Lot”

by Jesse Smith

I can not stress this enough, the “Q” is silent. Now that that is out of the way, if you are a fan of Movements and The Story So Far then you’re going to really like Tiqmmy. The underground baby of both of those bands that take the best of both. This emo quintet from Wisconsin is full of energetic and talented musicians, but let’s face it… it’s either drugs or being a talented musician when you live in Wisconsin. Tiqmmy was a solo project that was given life and since then the band has been evolving and really has hit their stride in their newest single “Perkins Parking Lot”.

Tiqmmy really pulled from earlier emo influences because the more you listen to it, this song could be a “Brand New” track in 2022. Having all the production done in house, the rawness of the song adds to the emo angst and really fits the style of the late 2000’s midwest emo scene. For all the music nerds like me, you’ll especially find the guitar tone choices are just *chefs kiss* exquisite. The guitars at :36 remind me of the band Incubus and it was such a nice touch that I couldn’t hear anything else that would go there. Remember when I referenced “Brand New”?? Well the vocal high harmonies throughout the song drives that point home and I am here for it! “Perkins Parking Lot” is one of the best underground emo tracks I’ve heard in a hot minute and is what I’ve been looking for.

Tiqmmy’s songs are relatable and easy to connect with, which is the #1 characteristic of a good emo song. This is one of those songs you can cry to and have self realizations too. Watching some videos, the band also prides themselves on having an energetic and exciting stage presence which just adds to how kick ass they are. If you’ve had a chance to see them, consider me jealous. But for now I’ll just have this song on repeat for my morning commutes.
