PREMIERE: Alaya’s Curse - CRIMSON (feat. FILTH)
Written by Jesse James Smith
Greensboro’s own Alaya’s Curse is back with a new single titled ‘Crimson’ and is their best work to date. Alaya’s Curse started as a secondary passion project over ten years ago, officially debuting in 2014 with their EP ‘The Escapist’. Since then, the band has gotten a second wind after 2020 with more consistent and serious releases. This leads us to Crimson, which is sonically their best song yet. Taking huge steps up from their previous releases, this almost sounds like a whole new band.
This new single has a noticeable step up in songwriting and production which really showcases and highlights the band’s strength and progress as a band. Blending their influences delicately while also wearing them proudly made for a nostalgic vibe that allows listeners to be on the same wavelength as the band themselves. In the very beginning, the synth sample they use heavily reminds me of early Born Of Osiris, but mixing that with their own style gives that feeling of familiarity while being fresh. If I had to describe the song in full, I would say it is atmospheric and open. The chorus was simple and few words, but was delivered in that vibey Deftones manner. This song does get heavy with the help of guest vocalist Dustin Jamal Mitchell from the band Filth. Overall this is the bands strongest release and I think this puts them in a new category among their local scene. If any of you reading are musicians, you know that you can pinpoint the moment that a band was taking it more seriously and joined the conversation of great acts in your local scene, and that is what I think this release will do for these guys.
They have a show coming up in August, so if you’re in the Winston-Salem area of NC, check these guys out.
