SONG REVIEW: Senior Year - “Hit Squad”

Written by Jesse James Smith

Senior Year is not just any easycore band, they are a unique blend of Hardcore and Pop Punk that takes the best of both styles and mashes them together. Hailing from the Mecca of Music, Los Angeles, they take LA’s embedded hardcore culture and mix it with the Cali-vibe feel good music that focuses on hooks and happiness. Hitting the scene this year, they’ve been putting in that work, already putting out three singles, with their latest being ‘Hit Squad’ and truthfully, this truly embodies the band’s vision and sound.

The band’s production choice is very bass heavy so if you have subs, this is going to rock your socks off. The low end in the mix hits you in the chest and gives that raw Hardcore sound. Like I said, the blend is unique but very straight forward. The vocals are very pop punk oriented and are typical to that genre. The hooks are catchy and very posi-vibed and upbeat, until the end. Like every good pop punk / hardcore blend they do have one genre switch up to something heavier, but this was not what I was expecting. Following in the traditional hardcore route, the heaviness wasn’t a breakdown like usual.

This band has a vibe and I'm here for it. Resembling Four Years Strong, they have their own spin on what easycore is, if you can even call it that. I definitely think they are exciting and as a new band, sky is the limit. All I know, is they’ve hit the ground running and seem to have a clear direction and plan for the band. I think both hardcore kids and pop punk kids will find joy in this in some way, shape, or form!
